Hugging Face

Hugging Face functions as the default repository for open machine learning, comparable to what GitHub is for code. It hosts models, datasets and Spaces, interactive applications that demonstrate models in the browser, alongside widely adopted libraries such as Transformers.

Unlike closed assistants such as ChatGPT, Hugging Face is infrastructure rather than a finished product: its value lies in access to open weights and the ability to run, fine-tune or deploy them independently. That offers flexibility and reduced vendor lock-in at the cost of more technical responsibility.

Core access is free, with a Pro plan at $9 per month adding perks for individuals and enterprise options for organizations. Paid compute for inference endpoints and GPU-backed Spaces is billed separately. Teams must also evaluate model licenses and quality, which vary considerably.
