ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: which assistant fits everyday work?
Three general-purpose assistants, the same entry price band. Where each one pulls ahead for writing, analysis and work inside existing tools.

The three most visible general-purpose assistants now sit in almost the same price band, which shifts the decision away from cost and toward fit. The data in our AI models and chat rankings places all three near the top, separated more by temperament than by raw capability.
At a glance
| ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price label | Free · Plus $20/mo | Free · Pro $20/mo | Free · Advanced $19.99/mo |
| Strongest at | Breadth: images, voice, browsing, plugins | Long documents, careful writing, code reasoning | Work inside Google's apps and multimodal input |
| Best fit | Generalists who want one tool for everything | Writers, analysts and developers | Teams already on Google Workspace |
| Trade-off | Feature sprawl can feel busy | Narrower set of built-in extras | Most value depends on the Google ecosystem |
ChatGPT: the widest toolbox
ChatGPT leads on popularity, and for good reason. It bundles image generation, voice conversation, web browsing, file analysis and custom assistants into a single interface. For someone whose day jumps from drafting an email to analyzing a spreadsheet to sketching a slide visual, that breadth removes the need to switch tools. The cost of breadth is focus: the interface has many modes, and output style can lean generic without clear instructions.
Claude: depth on text and code
Claude tends to score well with users who work through long material: contracts, research reports, codebases, meeting transcripts. Its writing is often described as measured and less formulaic, and it handles extended back-and-forth on a single document comfortably. It offers fewer built-in extras than ChatGPT, so buyers who mainly want image generation or voice may find it less complete as a single tool.
Gemini: the ecosystem play
Gemini is at its best when the work already lives in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Drive. Summarizing a long email thread, drafting from a Doc or pulling context from files without uploading them are its natural strengths. Outside that ecosystem, the advantage narrows and it competes more directly on general quality.
How to decide
- Mostly writing and long-document analysis: start with Claude.
- A bit of everything, including images and voice: start with ChatGPT.
- A Google Workspace organization: start with Gemini.
- Not sure: all three have free tiers. Run the same three real tasks through each for a week before paying.
Do teams need more than one?
Many do. A common pattern is one primary assistant for daily work and a second, free account for cross-checking important outputs. Because the paid tiers cost roughly the same, the more useful question is which single subscription removes the most friction from a typical week. Generous free tiers also make it simple to keep a second assistant on hand for comparison.
